Fun Facts: Statue of Liberty’s Surprising Value in Scrap Metal

28 Oct

I noticed the topic “Statue of Liberty” was trending on Twitter and wondered why. Low and behold, it is the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. My fiancé Joey asked me to look up what material the Statue of Liberty is made of and I found out it’s made of copper with a wood frame.

Statue of Liberty

If you’re thinking you can become a millionaire off the copper contained in the Statue of Liberty, think again.

Joey  takes scrap metal to the scrap yard in his spare time, and out of curiosity we both wanted to find out how much the Statue of Liberty would be worth in scrap metal.

First, we looked up the weight of the Statue of Liberty in copper, which is 62,000 pounds. Then we looked up the current price of copper as it fluctuates from day-to-day, which is $3.6469 per pound.  To calculate the scrap metal value of the Statue of Liberty, we simply multiplied the Statue’s weight in copper by the current value of copper per pound. Here are the surprising results of our calculation:

The Statue of Liberty is only worth $226,107.80 in scrap metal.  Add about $30,000 to this figure if you plan on scrapping its 250,000 pounds of steel. Compare that to the $64,000 francs, or $16,000 USD it cost in copper to construct back in 1876. Considering the historic value of The Statue of Liberty, you’d think it would be worth more, even in scrap metal, wouldn’t you?

The Pros and Cons of Working at Home

20 Oct

I am fortunate that I get to work at home. While this may seem like a dream opportunity, there are some things to consider if you want to work at home.

computerFirst the pros:

1. The freedom – Working from home gives you freedoms you wouldn’t otherwise have in a workplace setting – for one, you don’t have to worry about scheduling appointments around a 9-to-5 schedule, and, if you have a laptop, you can do your work just about anywhere – at a coffee shop, on the go, etc.

2. The clothes – Many workplaces make you wear a uniform or nice clothes which costs you money, but if you work from home, you don’t have to worry about investing in expensive work clothes.

3. Sleeping in – If you are not a morning person like me, working from home allows you to sleep in since you don’t have to get ready for work. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve went to bed late, gotten up for work and literally walked ten steps from the bed to the computer.

4. Keeping up with stuff around the house – If you like keeping a clean home, working from home gives you the opportunity to keep your house neat and tidy.

Now, for the cons:

1. The freedom – Yes, this pro to working at home can also be a con. Since working from home gives you so much freedom, you must be very disciplined and able to get your work done in a timely manner.

2. Working too hard – In a workplace setting, you are usually required to take rest breaks as well as a lunch break. When working from home, you may work too hard and wear yourself out if you don’t remember to take breaks.

3. Being on the computer too long – If you like Facebook as much as me and you already use your home computer to do work, you may find yourself spending too much time on the computer if you’re not careful. Since I’ve started working from home I’ve had to remind myself to take a break from the computer.

4. Lack of face-to-face interaction – If you are someone who enjoys face-to-face interaction in the workplace, working from home might not be for you.

Using Thank You cards to show gratitude, plus a giveaway!

16 Oct

Think about how often we say “Thank you” to people – maybe it’s for a gift you received, a compliment, or anything else.

Well, how many times that you’ve said “Thank you” have you given a thank you card in return? A thank you card is a simple way to let someone know you appreciate their act of kindness or gift, and is in itself an act of kindness.

Thank you cards are such a simple way to show gratitude to someone, and it can make someone’s whole day just by receiving one. You can make your own Thank You cards or you can buy them. I prefer to buy blank cards in bulk and give them out as thank you cards when the opportunity presents itself. I’ve seen my simple act of kindness, a thank you card that is, literally brighten someone’s day and it made my day in return.

To go along with this blog, I will enter everyone who follows me on Twitter in the next week for a chance to win two blank cards that can be used as Thank You cards or any other occasion. Just follow valiatweets on Twitter and let me know you read this blog or saw my video and are following me on Twitter.
